Welcome to Music Mentoring:
A Journey to Wellness through Music Making

Music Mentoring – Supporting Wellbeing Through Music

Music mentoring is a big part of my work and something I care deeply about. I use music as a tool to support wellbeing, confidence, and emotional expression, particularly for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) or mental health challenges. These sessions go beyond traditional music lessons and focus on using music in a therapeutic, supportive, and meaningful way.

Therapeutic Music Making

In music mentoring sessions, students may work with instruments such as piano or percussion, explore singing, or use songwriting as a way to express thoughts and emotions that can be difficult to put into words. Sessions are carefully adapted to the individual, offering a calm and safe space where students can build confidence, develop communication skills, and experience a sense of achievement. For some students, this work can also support Arts Award qualifications, helping to recognise progress and creativity in a way that feels positive and accessible.

Music, Mental Health, and Emotional Wellbeing

Music can have a powerful impact on emotional wellbeing. Making music can help reduce anxiety, improve mood, and support emotional regulation, while also encouraging focus, memory, and problem-solving skills. Many students find that music gives them a voice when they struggle to communicate in other ways, helping them process emotions and build emotional awareness and resilience.

Building Confidence That Carries Into Everyday Life

The confidence and skills developed through music mentoring often reach far beyond the sessions themselves. Students may show improved self-esteem, better focus, and increased resilience, which can positively affect their learning, relationships, and day-to-day life. Small musical successes can lead to big changes in how a student sees themselves and their abilities.

Working in Schools

Alongside my studio work, I also provide one-to-one music mentoring within school settings. I work closely with SENCOs and school staff to support students in a way that fits around their individual needs and school environment. By working collaboratively, I aim to use music as a supportive and empowering tool that helps students feel understood, valued, and capable.
