Music Mentoring – Supporting Wellbeing Through Music

Music mentoring is a central part of my work and something I care deeply about. I use music as a way to support wellbeing, confidence, and emotional expression, particularly for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) or mental health challenges. These sessions go beyond traditional music lessons and focus on using music in a therapeutic, supportive, and meaningful way.

Therapeutic Music Making

During music mentoring sessions, students may work with instruments such as piano or percussion, explore singing, or use songwriting to express thoughts and emotions that can be difficult to put into words. Sessions are carefully tailored to each individual, offering a calm, safe space where students can build confidence, develop communication skills, and experience a sense of achievement. For some students, this work can also support Arts Award qualifications, helping to recognise progress and creativity in a positive and accessible way.

Music, Mental Health, and Emotional Wellbeing

Music can have a powerful impact on emotional wellbeing. Making music can help reduce anxiety, lift mood, and support emotional regulation, while also encouraging focus, memory, and problem-solving skills. Many students find that music gives them a voice when communication feels challenging, helping them process emotions and build emotional awareness and resilience.

Building Confidence Beyond the Sessions

The confidence and skills developed through music mentoring often extend far beyond the sessions themselves. Students may experience improved self-esteem, increased focus, and greater resilience, which can positively influence their learning, relationships, and everyday life. Small musical successes can lead to meaningful changes in how a student sees themselves and their abilities.

Working in Schools

Alongside my studio-based work, I also offer one-to-one music mentoring within school settings. I work closely with SENCOs and school staff to support students in a way that fits around their individual needs and the school environment. Through collaboration, I use music as a supportive and empowering tool to help students feel understood, valued, and capable.
