How Learning an Instrument Can Support Wellbeing and Emotional Growth

As we enter Children’s Mental Health Week (Monday 3rd February – Sunday 9th February), it’s the perfect time to reflect on the ways we can support our children’s emotional well-being. With the growing pressures of school, social interactions, and daily challenges, children need outlets that allow them to express themselves, build confidence, and find joy. One of the most powerful tools for this is music.

At Layston Music, we take a holistic approach to music education, ensuring that our lessons are not just about learning notes and techniques but also about nurturing confidence, resilience, and emotional well-being. As a vocal and instrumental coach—and a parent myself—I’ve seen first-hand the transformative effects of music on children’s mental health. Here’s why learning an instrument or singing can make a real difference.

1. Music as a Healthy Emotional Outlet

Children often struggle to articulate their emotions, especially when dealing with anxiety, frustration, or sadness. Music provides a safe and constructive way to express feelings without the pressure of finding the right words. Playing the piano, strumming a guitar, or singing can be incredibly therapeutic, helping children process their emotions in a positive way.

🎵 Encouraging your child to play music when they feel overwhelmed can help them self-regulate their emotions and develop resilience.

2. Boosting Confidence and Self-Esteem

One of the most rewarding aspects of learning music is the sense of achievement it brings. Whether mastering a new chord, performing a piece from memory, or passing an RSL Grade Exam, each milestone builds self-confidence. Regular praise and recognition in music lessons help children believe in their abilities and see the value of perseverance.

🎵 Even small wins, like learning a simple melody or performing for family, can give children a great confidence boost.

3. Reducing Anxiety and Stress

The rhythmic nature of music has been shown to lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and promote relaxation. Engaging in music lessons provides a structured and enjoyable break from academic pressures, giving children a moment to breathe and focus on something creative and uplifting.

🎵 Singing, in particular, is known to release endorphins (feel-good hormones) and improve breathing, which can reduce stress and anxiety.

4. Encouraging Mindfulness and Focus

Music requires concentration and discipline. Whether it’s following sheet music, improvising, or preparing for a performance, children develop focus, patience, and mindfulness through regular practice. This is particularly beneficial for children who struggle with attention and organisation skills.

🎵 Practising music encourages a state of flow, where children become fully immersed in the moment, helping to reduce worries and improve mental clarity.

5. Strengthening Social Connections

Music is a universal language that brings people together. Whether in a group lesson, school band, or family singalong, music fosters connections and teamwork. For children who struggle socially, engaging in music can be a great way to build friendships and develop communication skills in a relaxed, enjoyable setting.

🎵 Performing together teaches valuable skills like listening, cooperation, and empathy—all essential for emotional and social development.
